Religion, politics and legitimation

The Religious Legitimation of Politics and the Political Legitimation of Religion in Finland (LegitRel) project (2020–2024), funded by the Academy of Finland, investigates the relationship between religion and politics in the case of Finnish parliamentary parties. The project combines quantitative and qualitative approaches and analyses the party platforms, parliamentary materials and voter survey data in order to determine how religion functions as legitimation for particular policies, and on the other hand, how politics are used to legitimate religion. The project is housed in the study of religion (Faculty of Arts) in the University of Helsinki and led by Professor Titus Hjelm. (Site images: Tinksu Wessman, Sapfograf.)
