Climate is changing, causing warming temperatures and changes in precipitation and snow cover. High latitude forests are typically temperature limited, and thus considered to be especially sensitive to climate warming. The most dramatic changes are to be expected in winter conditions; characteristic for boreal forest is a long and cold winter, and trees are adapted to these conditions. Our team studies how boreal forests respond to changing climate conditions. We are studying changes in both tree structure and physiology as we emphasize the strong linkage they have. This team belongs to the Ecosystem Processes Group led by prof. Jaana Bäck. The group works in the Institute of Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) at the University of Helsinki that is a joint unit under the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry.
