The Aleksanteri Institute is located in the City Centre Campus of the University of Helsinki. Our street address is Unioninkatu 40. Please note that as a research institute we have no regular opening hours. If you're planning a visit, it's a good idea to contact us beforehand!

The  50 researchers and other experts working at the Aleksanteri Institute have specialized in various fields of Russian and Eastern European Studies and are ready to comment on a wide range of issues. English is the safest language, but most of us also speak Russian. If you cannot find a suitable expert from the list, please don't hesitate to contact

If you are seeking information on Russian and Eastern Europe or looking for a specific book or journal article, you might  want to take a look at the University of Helsinki Research Guide. At the moment our institute only provides limited information services.

The Aleksanteri Institute has many study opportunities to offer at all academic levels.

Bachelor's level:

The Aleksanteri Institute is a part of the University of Helsinki doctoral training where we constitute a part of The Doctoral Programme in Political, Societal and Regional Change (PYAM). We are also in charge of  Finnish – Russian Network for Russian and Eurasian Studies in Social Science and Humanities (FRRESH) and YRUSH fellowship programme for Russian PhD students. If you are interested in doctoral studies on our field, please contact Research Coordinator Kaarina Aitamurto.

The Aleksanteri Institute and its researchers are open to different forms of cooperation. If you are looking for a project partner, please contact Director Markku Kangaspuro or Head of International Affairs Anna Korhonen.

Our Visiting Fellows programme welcomes applications once a year (in January-February). In addition to the Fellows programme, we can invite a few individual scholars for research stays at the Aleksanteri Institute. if you are interested in Finnish Russian and Eastern European Studies and would like to come work with us, please contact Head of International Affairs Anna Korhonen.

The Aleksanteri Institute moved to Metsätalo (Unioninkatu 40) in late November 2021. We have the use of several seminar rooms and lecture halls, so please check the exact location of your event beforehand. If you are planning an individual visit, please make an appointment.

The Institute is located in Kruununhaka close to the Senate Square and a 10 minutes walk from the central railway station. For the most convenient route, please consult Google maps or the Journey planner provided by the Helsinki Region Transport (HSL).
