Saari Laboratory

The Saari Laboratory serves the diverse needs of the Saari Clinic as well as research and teaching.

The laboratory of the Department of Production Animal Medicine employs research technicians who perform laboratory tests related to clinical chemistry, bacteriology and reproduction. We primarily study patient and research samples for the Production Animal Hospital, but also accept samples from external clients.

The Reproduction Research Laboratory conducts various sperm analyses as well as histological, cytological and bacteriological examinations. In addition, the laboratory freezes sperm collected in the outpatient department and stores it in the animal sperm bank. The laboratory also studies the endometrial biopsies of mares as part of the assessment of their breeding ability.

The Laboratory of Clinical Chemistry primarily analyses milk, blood, stool, urine and skin samples. When necessary, the laboratory performs haematological examinations as well as enzyme and electrolyte determinations on blood samples. Milk is cultured for bacteria to determine their antimicrobial sensitivity. Bacteria culturing and sensitivity determinations are also performed on other samples or secretions. The most common tests on urine samples include bacteria culturing and the determination of antimicrobial sensitivity as well as sediment analysis. Stool samples are typically studied for endoparasites and skin samples for ectoparasites.

Producers can deliver milk samples for examination directly to the laboratory during office hours without advance notice. Milk samples accompanied by a referral can be left in the box outside the clinic office. Samples can also be delivered during out-of-hours emergency service, in which case the on-call veterinarian must be called to ensure that each sample can be cultured without delay.

Stool samples from horses can be delivered directly to the laboratory during office hours for parasite testing. If samples are taken from more than five horses at a time, the person delivering the samples should agree in advance on a suitable date for their analysis.
