Laboratory and diagnostic imaging

Laboratory and diagnostic imaging at Saari Clinic
Laboratory service

The Saari Clinic has a laboratory for milk, manure and the most common blood sample examinations. In addition, laboratory services are provided by the Laboratory of the Department of Equine and Small Animal Medicine at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. During on-duty hours, the clinic’s own laboratory can perform the laboratory examinations required to start treatment.

If you wish to send us samples, please contact the staff by phone at 02941 40534.

Enquiries about test results

Preliminary results can be requested during morning telephone consultation hours from 8.00 to 9.00 (phone 02941 40700), or directly from the laboratory between 8.00 and 15.00 (phone 02941 40534).

Milk samples

Producers can deliver milk samples for examination directly to the laboratory during office hours without advance notice. Milk samples accompanied by a referral can be left in the box outside the clinic office. Samples can also be delivered during out-of-hours emergency service, in which case the on-call veterinarian must be called to ensure that each sample can be cultured without delay.

Reproduction Research Laboratory

The Reproduction Research Laboratory conducts various sperm analyses as well as histological, cytological and bacteriological examinations. In addition, the laboratory freezes sperm collected in the outpatient department and stores it in the animal sperm bank. The laboratory also studies the endometrial biopsies of mares as part of the assessment of their breeding ability.

Parasite research

Stool samples from horses can be delivered directly to the laboratory during office hours for parasite testing. If samples are taken from more than five horses at a time, the person delivering the samples should agree in advance on a suitable date for their analysis.

Diagnostic imaging

The Saari Clinic is equipped with facilities for radiography and ultrasound examinations. In individual exceptionally difficult cases, the patient may be referred to further examinations at the imaging unit of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital’s Small Animal and Equine Hospital, whose veterinarians and radiographers are specialised in diagnostic imaging and have access to state-of-the-art equipment.
