PUPIL ADMISSIONS for academic year 2022–2023

Helsinki Normal Lyceum provides basic education for grades 1-3 and 7–9 as well as general upper secondary education. Comprehensive school grades 7–9 share facilities and teachers with the general upper secondary school at the Normal Lyceum. Studying in basic education takes place according to the national core curriculum drawn up in 2014.

Basic education pupils are admitted based on their school admission area from southern Helsinki, except for the Latin class for which pupils are admitted based on a separate aptitude test. School admission areas are displayed in Helsinki's map services: https://palvelukartta.hel.fi/fi/.

Admission for grade 1

Compulsory education starts in autumn term 2022 for children born in 2015.

Helsinki Normal Lyceum admits approximately 20 pupils for the 1st grade primarily from the school’s school admission area.

Welcome to school guide for homes

City of Helsinki sends a welcome to school guide for next autumn's 1st graders on September or November 2021.

Compulsory education letters are sent via Suomi.fi service starting on January 5th 2022. 

Registering for school

Parents or guardians can register their children for the school electronically via Asti at asti.hel.fi January 5th to January 30th 2022.

In certain cases registration can only be done on site at the Helsinki Normal Lyceum. These include extended compulsory education or starting a school one year before or after the start of compulsory education, special support and changing a nearby school from Swedish to Finnish or vice versa.

On site registration is open at the Helsinki Normal Lyceum (Ratakatu 6B, entrance through the courtyard, ground floor)  on January 26th 2022 from 8.00 to 10.00.

Language programme/grades 1–6

 A1 language The A1 languages offered by the Helsinki Normal Lyceum are English and French for all pupils starting from 1st grade.

Optional A2 language At the Helsinki Normal Lyceum French or English can also be studied as an A2 language starting in 3rd grade.

An information event for the parents of future first-graders will be held on 8th December 2021 at 18.00 in the school auditorium (A107) or online depending on Covid restrictions. Further details will be given by the end of November.

The school admission area for grades 7–9 comprises the school admission areas of the Snellman and Tehtaankatu primary schools. If a pupil lives and is registered at an address in the aforementioned area all through secondary school, their local school is the Helsinki Normal Lyceum.

Pupils for the Latin class are admitted based on an aptitude test. The test is an examination in the pupil’s native language. Pupils in city of Helsinki's schools enroll via Wilma, pupils of other cities or schools enroll via en electronic form (https://www.hel.fi/kasvatuksen-ja-koulutuksen-toimiala/fi/palvelut/lomakkeet/ >Perusopetus > Kuudesluokkalaiset > Ulkopaikkakuntalaisten ilmoittautumislomake soveltuvuuskokeeseen, in Finnish), which must be submitted to the office of the Helsinki Normal Lyceum’s comprehensive school by email (lotta.sjoblom(at)helsinki.fi) or by mail (Helsingin normaalilyseo, Sihteerit, PL 38, 00014 Helsingin yliopisto) by Tuesday, 1 January 2022.

The test will take place in the auditorium of the Helsinki Normal Lyceum (Ratakatu 6 B, 00120 Helsinki, auditorium A107) on Thursday, 20 January 2022 from 12.00 to 15.00. No separate invitation for the test will be sent. Only the score from the aptitude test will play a role in the admission to the Latin class.

All admission decisions will be mailed to pupils' homes by the end of March.

Admission for other basic education grades 

We will accept pupils only from our school admission area for grades 2, 3, 8 and 9. School admission areas are displayed in Helsinki's map services: https://palvelukartta.hel.fi/fi/.
