The fundraising in celebration of Academician Markku Kulmala supports atmospheric research

Academician and Professor Markku Kulmala celebrates his birthday on 29 and 30 October 2018. Kulmala is a physicist and has devoted his extensive academic career to studying atmospheric composition and, particularly, the formation of aerosol particles.

Long academic career

Academician Markku Kulmala has served as professor of physics at the University of Helsinki since 1996. In his research, Kulmala has especially focused on investigating the formation of aerosol particles in the Earth’s atmosphere, as well as on studying the interactions between boreal forests and the atmosphere. Since the 1990s, Kulmala has also actively contributed to the development of the global SMEAR (Station for Measuring Earth Surface Atmosphere Relations) network, which analyses changes in the atmosphere. This work has resulted, for example, in the world’s longest continuous data series regarding the size distribution of nanoparticles.

Academician Kulmala is the most cited geoscientist in the world. His work is highly acclaimed both in Finland and abroad and he has received several dozens of awards and honours for his research work throughout his career. Kulmala has been invited as a member of both the Academy of Finland and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as of numerous international networks within his field. In addition to his research work, Kulmala has also supervised several dozens of doctoral dissertations during his career. Kulmala has also been active in the promotion of the international aspect of atmospheric research at the University of Helsinki and of the networking of young atmospheric researchers by bringing a number of international students and researchers to visit and collaborate with his team at the Kumpula Campus and especially at the SMEAR station located in Hyytiälä, Juupajoki.

Donations towards atmospheric research and sharing of expertise of Markku Kulmala

Any proceeds from the fundraising arranged in celebration of Academician Markku Kulmala will be directed towards the fund established for this purpose to support atmospheric research, education and studies. Kulmala firmly believes that all of humanity’s greatest challenges related to climate change, food production and water supply can be resolved with the help of extensive measurement data and comprehensive research. Kulmala has applied this philosophy in his own work with excellent results.

According to the wishes of Prof. Kulmala, the proceeds from the celebration fundraising will particularly be targeted at the advancement of atmospheric research and education in the Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki.

By participating in the fundraising, you will contribute to the global sharing of expertise of Academician Kulmala for the betterment of the entire world. His expertise is particularly needed in countries that are still lacking a sufficiently versatile and technically advanced measuring system to enable new insights. Kulmala particularly hopes to continue in the future the mentoring of his gifted students and sharing of his expertise, for example, in the form of a book about how state-of-the-art science is created and what is required from leaders in such contexts.
