Experimental Equipment

Laser systems for gas-phase molecular spectroscopy

  • Fully stabilized Optical Frequency Comb (OFC) generators: Menlo systems FC1500-250-WG with M-NIR and P250 PM PULSE EDFA extensions (GPS-referenced), Menlo Systems Orange-Comb-250 + HIGH POWER 10, two home-built mid-infrared OFC systems (see Opt. Express 25, 4190 (2017) and APL Photonics 6, 026103 (2021)
  • Continuous-wave laser instruments, including high-power (0.5 to 5 W) CW-OPO's, widely tunable external-cavity diode lasers (near infrared), a tunable Ti:sapphire laser, high-power (15 to 20 W) CW Yb-fiber amplifiers and quantum cascade lasers.

Spectroscopy/spectrometry and microscopy

  • Bruker IFS 120HR FTIR spectrometer (high resolution)
  • NT-MDT NTEGRA Spectra II AFM-Raman-TERS microscope (down to 10 nm spatial resolution) with laser excitation at 532 and 633 nm.
  • Confocal scanning Raman microscope (Horiba) with spatial resolution down to 1 micron with laser excitation at 325, 488, and 785 nm and remote probing with laser excitation at 785 nm.
  • Optical spectrum analyzers (UV to middle infrared)
  • Cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) cells (Gasera PA201/301), cavity ring-down spectrometers and multipass cells

  • Custom-made Laser Photolysis - Photoionization Mass Spectrometry (LP-PIMS)

Low temperature chemistry

  • Two closed-cycle helium cryostats operating at temperatures down to 3 K  (Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd)
  • FTIR spectrometers for near-infrared to far-infrared, including FT-Raman (Bruker Vertex 80 and Bruker Vertex 80V)
  • Optical parametric oscillator with IR extension (LaserVision, coverage from 1.35 to 16 microns, pumped by Continuum injection-seeded Powerlite 9010 Nd:YAG laser).
  • Excimer laser (MPB MSX-250,  193 nm), Argon-ion laser (Series 532, Model 35 LAS 450 230, MellesGriot).

Computational Resources

For the most part, we rely on the high-performance computing resources maintained by the Finnish Center for Scientific Computing.  This includes most of the standard tools for computational chemistry, including for example Gaussian, Turbomole, NW-CHEM, CP2K, LAMMPS and Gromacs.  We also have access to additional supercomputing resources from the University of Helsinki and the Finnish Grid and Cloud Infrasturcture.

In addition two local Linux clusters are maintained by members of the group, the "Gold" cluster with 64 cores on four nodes, and "Silver" with 96 cores on four nodes.  These clusters are in general available for use by all members of the group with prior arrangement.

We also have our own licenses for some specialized tools, including COSMOtherm and COSMOconf, and the Spartan software suite.
