Ivan Mammarella (PhD) is Professor of Biohydrometeorology.  His research is mostly related to biosphere-atmosphere interactions and, in particular, on measuring and understanding vertical exchange processes of momentum, energy, GHGs, other trace gases and aerosol particles between the atmosphere and different terrestrial ecosystems (forest, peatland and lake). Timo Vesala has been Professor of Meteorology since 2001. He has acted as Academy professor since 2015. Vesala’s main research fields are micrometeorology, biosphere-atmosphere interactions, biogeochemical cycles – especially carbon and water cycles – in forests, wetlands, lakes and rivers, greenhouse and other trace gases and in general mass and heat transport and phase transitions in various atmospheric and ecophysiological systems. His expertise ranges from cell, plant, ecosystem and regional to global scales. Vesala is the leader of ICOS-Finland (Integrated Carbon Observation System). He has run a film club with Dr. Eija Juurola since 2009. He has prepared a popular talk “From Vertigo to Blue velvet – Connotations between movies and climate change”. Annalea Lohila (PhD) is an associate professor (50/50 between INAR/Univ. Helsinki and Finnish Meteorological Institute) specialized in biogeochemical cycles and greenhouse gas flux measurements. She has contributed to building flux measurement stations compliant for ICOS and developing the measurements. Her work has dealt with carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide fluxes between biosphere and atmosphere in different boreal ecosystems, particularly on pristine and managed peatlands. Xuefei Li (PhD) has broad interest in the biogeochemical cycle of diverse terrestrial ecosystems, including subtropical forests, peatland forest, pristine peatlands and urban wetlands. In the past, she has studied the light-use strategies of woody species, functional trait diversity and nitrogen resorption in a subtropical forest. In recent years, she mostly focuses on the fluxes and processes of greenhouse gases (CH4 and CO2 ) in northern wetlands using eddy covariance and stable isotope techniques, and on predicting the biosphere-atmosphere interactions in wetland using process-based model and land surface model. She is currently the principal investigator of the Academy of Finland funded project “MIso”, which aims to quantify CH4-related processes with in-situ stable isotope methods and to improve CH4 modelling. Yann Salmon's (PhD) research focus is on water and carbon fluxes in trees and between trees and the atmosphere, what are the processes regulating those fluxes, how they are influenced by the environment and how this response affect the trees. In particular, he is interested in the effect of drought. Beyond the individual level, he studies how tree ecophysiology and fluxes: 1) impact biogeochemical cycles in forest ecosystems, and 2) how they respond to and shape tree ecology. Kukka-Maaria Kohonen (MSc) is a PhD student working on carbonyl sulfide exchange in different boreal ecosystems. Carnoyl sulfide is tested as a proxy for plant photosynthesis. Her previous work concentrated on freshwater greenhouse gas exchange and she is still partly working on lake fluxes as well. Toprak Aslan (MSc) works on vertical turbulent fluxes of momentum, energy and gases between the atmosphere and biosphere measured by eddy covariance technique. His current research project, i.e. quantifying the effect of thinning on coupled carbon, water and energy cycles in managed boreal forests, aims to improve the scientific knowledge on understanding the role of forest management, particularly thinning, on boreal forest ecosystem carbon cycle and storage, energy balance and albedo.

Aki Vähä (MSc) is a doctoral candidate, currently working on his thesis 'Gas transfer in an acuatic environment' under the supervision of Acad. Prof. Timo Vesala, Prof. Petteri Uotila and Doc. Ivan Mammarella. His current research concentrates on eddy covariance fluxes, measured during the KITEX campaign in 2018 from the boreal river Kitinen. Antti Leppänen (MSc) has a background in mathematics. He is working with peatland methane emission modeling and model development with JSBACH-HIMMELI.

Paula Hietala (MSc) is a theoretical physicist who is interested in climate related research. Besides physics, she has studied meteorology, chemistry and mathematics. She has also some knowledge about quantum chemical calculations and some experience in flight measurements related to the aerosol particles. Now she is working with nano- and microbubbles: their stability and role in gas transfer at water-air interface are the focus of her research. Her work is funded by AtMath. Aleksanteri Mauranen (MSc) is a doctoral student working on the theory of stomatal control and gas exchange in trees. He's been developing a new theoretical framework for stomatal control functions and trying it out using the land surface model JSBACH. Mikko Skogberg (MSc) is a doctoral student working on greenhouse gas fluxes and carbon sequestration in agricultural ecosystems. He conducts and analyzes field measurements in Haltiala as part of his work in the stn MULTA project under the Carbon Action platform.

Matti Räsänen (PhD) is mainly working on the water balance of smallholder farming systems in Kenya. He is specifically interested in rainwater harvesting, on-farm ponds, and drip irrigation. He has also studied the carbon and water exchange at African savanna ecosystems using the eddy covariance and chamber measurement techniques. Xin Zhuang (MSc) is working as a doctoral student on the physiology of phloem transport. Particularly, she studies how stress impact carbon and water fluxes inside plant individuals. Previously she studied provenance/inheritance-based plant trait variation and plant invasion physiology. Xin is generally interested in plant sciences, ecology, biogeography and paleontology.

Ruihan Xiao (MSc) is a doctoral student coming from Northeast Forestry University in China. As an exchange student, she came to the University of Helsinki to study for 15 months funded by the China Scholarship  Council (CSC). In the past, she has studied the carbon and nitrogen cycling in boreal ecosystems. The title of  her research is Study on Carbon-nitrogen Coupling Characteristics of Key Ecological Processes in Larch (Larix gmelinii) Forest Ecosystem. She is especially interested in greenhouse gas fluxes and nutrient cycling of  diverse terrestrial ecosystems. Currently, she is learning eddy covariance technique and data analysis in the  University of Helsinki. She will also participate in the project "MIso" which was recently funded by Academy of Finland, studying gas diffusivity along a peat profile and the isotopic fractionation during soil gas diffusion.

Asta Laasonen (BSc) is a MSc student in Atmospheric Sciences currently working on carbon monoxide exchange in different ecosystems. The research focuses on carbon monoxide fluxes measured by eddy covariance technique and chamber measurements.

Olli-Pekka Siira (PhD) is working as a postdoctoral researcher on the ecosystem greenhouse gas exchange studies. He has expertise on the issues of the land use, land use change, and forestry sector (LULUCF). He is studying ecosystems of forests, wetlands, agricultural land, and lakes. Olli-Pekka is especially interested in global change and paleoecology.

Petra Manninen (MSc) is a doctoral student working on carbon and nitrogen exchange in agricultural ecosystems. Her previous studies include soil carbon exchange in African savanna ecosystems. Now she is working on a research project ENSINK funded by Academy of Finland and focusing on eddy covariance and chamber measurement techniques.

Mika Korkiakoski (PhD) is working as a postdoctoral researcher on industrializing eddy covariance measurements together with Vaisala corporation. His previous studies and interests include greenhouse gas and energy fluxes, and their measurement methods in different boreal ecosystems, especially in managed peatlands and forests. Mika is also working as a PI of Lettosuo, one of the ICOS ecosystem stations in Finland.

Lujun Xu is an associate professor working on lake effects and atmospheric boundary layer. Her research focuses on modelling lake effects on regional water and energy cycle, land surface models and atmospheric boundary layer parameterization.
