Between the Times – Embattled Temporalities and Political Imagination in Inter-war Europe is a Starting Grant Project, led by Liisi Keedus and funded by the European Commission through the European Research Council. The project is based at the School of Humanities, Tallinn University.
At the University of Tampere, HEX looks for answers to these fundamental questions by rethinking historical experiences, historical explanations and historical knowledge, and their place in the current world.

Tanja Börzel is professor of political science and holds the Chair for European Integration at the Otto-Suhr-Institute for Political Science, Freie Universität Berlin. She earned a PhD from the European University Institute, Florence, Italy. She is the director of the Cluster of Excellence “Contestations of the Liberal Script” as well as the H2020 Collaborative Projects “EU-STRAT – The EU and Eastern Partnership Countries: An Inside-Out Analysis and Strategic. Assessment” and “EU-LISTCO – Europe’s External Action and the Dual Challenges of Limited Statehood and Contested Orders“. She also directs the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence “Europe and its Citizens”.
Massimo Fichera is Academy of Finland Research Fellow and Adjunct Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Helsinki. He holds a PhD in Law (University of Edinburgh, UK) and a Master in International Affairs (ISPI, Milan, Italy). He qualified as Avvocato in Italy and graduated at the Faculty of Law of the University of Messina (Italy). His research and teaching interests lie in the area of constitutional theory and EU Law, in particular the interplay between EU and international law. He is also interested in the notion of transnational law and in comparative constitutional law.
Sarah Green is the Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Helsinki.
Susanna Lindroos-Hovinheimo is a Professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Helsinki.
Tove Malloy works at the European Studies, Department of European and International Law, Institute of International Management and Economic Education of Europa-Universität Flensburg. Prof. Malloy is a political theorist by background specializing in the political and legal aspects of national minority rights and protection in international law and international relations, especially in the European context. Her areas of expertise cover the major international organizations, the European Union as well as individual countries.
Samuel Moyn is Henry R. Luce Professor of Jurisprudence at Yale Law School and Professor of History at Yale University. He received a doctorate in modern European history from the University of California-Berkeley in 2000 and a law degree from Harvard University in 2001.
William Nelson, Judge Edward Weinfeld professor of Law in New York University School of Law, has been active as a legal historian since the publication of his first history article in the New York University Annual Survey of American Law in 1966.
Jayne Svenungsson is the Professor of Systematic Theology (with competence in Philosophy of Religion) at Lund University. Her doctoral dissertation centered on the renewed debate on God within French phenomenology in the 1990s, and her present research is focused on philosophy and theology of history as well as on political philosophy and theology. In recent years she has also worked extensively on various aspects of Jewish thought and on anti-Jewish stereotypes within Christian theology. Currently, she is PI of a project on spiritual and aesthetic experience.
Silke Trommer joined the Politics Department at the University of Manchester in 2016. Previously, she held a lectureship in World Politics and Sustainable Development at the University of Helsinki (Finland) from 2014 to 2016 and a post-doc at the Asia Research Centre at Murdoch University (Australia) in 2012/13. Her research and teaching activities focus on the politics of global trade, global governance, development, and on social movements in the international political economy.
Stefan Vogenauer is the Director of the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History. He works mostly in the areas of European legal history, comparative law and transnational private law. He has a particular interest in legal transfers in the common law world, the history of EU law and the comparative history of legal method.

Nadine Hassouneh holds a PhD from the University of Kent – Brussels School of International Studies. She is a Syria Contextual Analyst (iMMAP, Amman, Jordan) and has conducted research on the role of statelessness on the mobilisation of the Palestinians in the diaspora, particularly in Belgium, Jordan, and Lebanon.
