Ion exchange for nuclear waste treatment and recycling

Ion exchange research in the Radiochemistry unit of University of Helsinki

We develop applications and research the fundamentals for the separation of harmful or useful chemical trace components (radionuclides, precious or harmful metals or metalloid, organometallic complexes). The challenge is to capture these trace components efficiently from the overwhelming excess of ordinary bulk chemical components. We target the problem by highly selective inorganic materials that are made to contain multifunctional ion sieve, sorption, redox and oxidation properties.
