Mordovia 2013

In the second half of August 2013, the first HALS field trip started from Saransk in the Republic of Mordovia, some 600 km E/SE of Moscow.

The language which was the focus of this field linguistics trip is the Mordvinian language Erzya. Erzya is a member of the Uralic language family and, by historical-linguistic standards, it is fairly closely related to Finnic and Saamic. The excursion was organized by Prof. Riho Grünthal and Dr. Jack Rueter. An article volume was published in the series Uralica Helsingiensia as the result of the field trip and the subsequent seminar.
