Finnish as a second language and situated learning

The research project aims at finding new ways to support adult learners of Finnish by exploiting the language learning possibilities offered by their everyday environment. Our project provides insights into models of language learning outside the classroom. We analyze situated language learning as it happens in interaction either at work or during leisure time. Our main research method is Conversation Analysis, which allows us to tackle the following questions: What kind of learning happens in interaction? What possibilities for learning are offered by an authentic environment? How can the learners enhance their participation and expertise as members of the Finnish-speaking community? The project has received funding from Kone Foundation for three years (2016–2018).
