We are a research group based in University of Helsinki, studying the functioning and responses of boreal forest ecosystems. We are mainly concentrated on the different aspects of tree physiology, the complexity of soil processes and the flows of matter and energy between the forests, atmosphere and aquatic ecosystems. We work within the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth system Research INAR. Also, we participate in different larger projects and infrastructures:
Our group shares people and resources between the Department of Forest Sciences and Department of Physics. Accordingly, we are located on two different campuses: Viikki and Kumpula. In Viikki, our main location is the Forest Sciences building (Latokartanonkaari 7, "B-building"). In Kumpula, you can find us in Dynamicum (Erik Palménin aukio 1).
We conduct a big share of our field work in Hyytiälä field station in Southern Finland near the town of Orivesi that also hosts SMEAR II measuring station (operating since 1995), and in the eastern Lapland, in Värriö subartctic research station that also hosts SMEAR I measuring station (operating since 1991). Furthermore, we study urban trees in Viikki and other forests in numerous locations around Finland.
