Arriving by car

Lammi Biological Station is located 4 km southeast of Lammi town centre and 2 km south-east of national road 12. The route from the road to the station is marked with the sign ‘Biologinen asema 2’.

Public transport

When arriving from Helsinki, it is usually best to travel first by bus or train to Lahti or Hämeenlinna, and from there to Lammi by bus.

There are three bus stops nearby where you can get off when travelling to the station:

• The ‘Biologinen asema th (Hämeenlinna)’ stop is located at the intersection  of national road 12 and Pääjärventie. The stop is two kilometres from the station.
• The ‘Lammi Kirkkokallio (Hämeenlinna)’ stop is located roughly three kilometres from the station on road 12. This stop is usually the best option if you arrive at the station over the weekend.
• ‘Lammi bus station (Hämeenlinna)’ stop

My duties include organising the operations of the station, coordinating the cooperation of staff groups, developing the station operations and managing stakeholder cooperation. In addition, I conduct research as well as supervise trainees and thesis writers. I am responsible for the development of teaching at the station,  and I teach in field courses.

My work includes assisting researchers, students, course coordinators and international trainees, as well as coordinating their collaboration. In the case of course participants, this usually means organising the use of the necessary AV and other equipment as well as facilities. I also teach on courses and organise education and outreach related to nature, science, and the environment. In addition, I keep this station website up to date.

I study tree hyraxes and dwarf galagos, nocturnal animals in East Africa. In Finland, I study the acoustic communication of the wren and the three-toed woodpecker.

I coordinate and develop the operations of the Wild Animal Phenotyping infrastructure at both Lammi Biological Station and Viikki Campus. I am the course coordinator for the ECGS-024 Technology in Environmental Sciences course.

My duties include research, teaching and public engagement. I conduct both basic and applied aquatic research, supervise theses and teach on field courses. Public engagement includes participation in various committees, presentations, interviews, popular articles and expert duties.

I am interested in the study of functional ecology, with a special emphasis on planktonic communities. My interests range from spatial and temporal patterns of these organisms to the development of data synthesis of widespread theoretical remarks. My ultimate goal is to  deepen our understanding of the complex dynamics and relationships that underpin life beneath the water’s surface and its connections with the terrestrial realm.

As the head of research infrastructure, I am responsible for the research infrastructures of Lammi Biological Station, Kilpisjärvi Biological Station, and Tvärminne Zoological Station.

I work as research project coordinator in the research group of associate professor Marjo Saastamoinen. Group studies processes and the underlying genetic mechanisms that shape intraspecific life history variation in the wild. Most of our research focuses on understanding how organisms cope with environmental variation in nature, such as habitat fragmentation or environmental stress. Main research species is butterfly Melitaea cinxia. I also assist in data collection in Craig Primmers research group, that focuses on salmon genetics.
