Thriving Nature professors

Thriving Nature initiative has selected the tenure track professors whom form the core of the academic activities. Below you find short overview of each of the selected persons and their respective roles at the Thriving Nature -project.
Frédéric Guillaume

Frédéric Guillaume is Associate Professor in Ecological and Evolutionary Dynamics, and he started in the position 1st January 2021. Frédéric Guillaume focuses on how ecology influences evolution, and vice versa, in any taxa.

Saijaliisa Kangasjärvi

Saijaliisa Kangasjärvi is Associate Professor in Translational Plant Science, and she started in the position 1st September 2020. This is a joint-position with the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. Professor Kangasjärvi develops research and teaching in translational crop science by combining cutting-edge bioscience with innovative agronomy. She has extensive experience in crop genetics, genomics or other forms of translational crop science. Kangasjärvi's research effort will facilitate breeding more resilient plant species/cultivars of economic value in various future environments, and will provide critical information for practical plant breeding.

Roosa Laitinen

Roosa Laitinen is Associate Professor in Genomics-based Plant Science, and she started in the position 1st April 2021. Professor Laitinen focusses on gene and genomes in plant individuals, populations or communities and to eventually clarify differences between species and their adaptation mechanisms in the changing environment.

Tanja Pyhäjärvi

Tanja Pyhäjärvi is Associate Professor in Forest Genomics and Breeding at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, and she started in the position 1st January 2021. At the Thriving Nature -project Tanja Pyhäjärvi aims to develop new and efficient breeding methods to increase the resilience and production of forest raw materials in a sustainable manner. Her research also focuses into the population genetic structure of boreal trees and the evolutionary dynamics that have resulted in that structure. Results will be utilized in designing deployment populations, such as seed orchards and mixtures of selected clones, for sustainable forestry.

Giovanni Strona

Giovanni Strona is Associate Professor in Ecological Datasciences, and he started in the position 18th July 2020. Professor Strona is aiming to develop new approaches to understand ecological and/or evolutionary processes and interaction networks between genomes, populations, communities and environments.
