The core of the collection of Wittgenstein Materials consists of the archives kept and organized by Georg Henrik von Wright during his life-time. In addition to a complete collection of copies of the Wittgenstein Nachlaß, it contains material such as the complete copy of the so-called Helsinki Ausgabe of the Philosophische Untersuchungen, a collection of primary material about Wittgenstein’s life and writings (including a collection of photographs), and the Bergen Electronic Edition (BEE). It also contains secondary sources research material such as correspondence relating to the posthumous editing and publishing of Wittgenstein’s Nachlaß and von Wright’s analytical content tables for selected Wittgenstein Nachlaß items.
The catalogue called the Wittgenstein Materials, available as a PDF file, is the catalogue Georg Henrik von Wright himself made of the holding of his Wittgenstein Archives, which now forms a part of WWA. This catalogue was completed in 1997. It gives a good overview of the contents, but lacks some precision in its details. Two updates to the catalogue have later been made:
- Wittgenstein Materials update v. 8 (Jan 2015). This catalogue preserves the original description provided by von Wright, but also includes more details about the materials (except for the biographical part). There is also a section for editorial comments made by the staff of WWA and, occasionally, also by guest researchers. Small updates to this section is made every now and then. As of 2020, further updates to the catalogue are in progress.
- Biographical Materials. This is an update of the Wittgenstein related biographical holdings of WWA (described on page 42 of the original catalogue). As of 2020, further updates to the catalogue are in progress.
The updated catalogues are available as PDF files for private use on a research related, or otherwise well-motivated request, from WWA. For further information and inquiries, please contact WWA.
