The University of Helsinki Language Centre https://www2.helsinki.fi/en/language-centre is one of Finland’s largest language training institutes in terms of both staff numbers and the curriculum. The Language Centre is responsible for the language and communication studies required for academic degrees at all University of Helsinki faculties, and offers comprehensive language services to the academic and wider communities.
The University of Helsinki Language Centre invites applications for a
UNIVERSITY INSTRUCTOR OF SPEECH COMMUNICATION
for a permanent appointment starting on 16 August 2021.
The duties of the university instructor include teaching speech communication in Finnish as the native language included in various undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of Helsinki based on the needs of the degree programmes. The work involves the development of the content, material, methods and assessment of teaching, guidance and supervision. In addition to the teaching duties, the teacher will participate in the joint development work of the Language Centre and will attend to other duties, as separately determined.
The provisions governing the University’s operations stipulate that applicants must have a master’s degree applicable for the position as well as sufficient oral and written skills in Finnish and Swedish. Citizens of countries other than Finland may be exempted from these language requirements.
We value pedagogical training and skills. We hope that applicants have experience in teaching that corresponds to the job description as well as the ability to produce learning material. Extensive experience in teaching and the ability to apply diverse teaching methods are considered an asset. The appointee must also have good cooperation skills and be willing to develop not only their own skills, but also the Language Centre’s operations.
The salary for the position will be based on levels 4–5 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The appointee’s monthly salary will range from €3,005 to €4,050. There will be a six-month trial period at the beginning of employment.

4) A report (1–3 pages) on the applicant’s teaching activities and teaching philosophy

Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview and a demonstration of teaching skills. The interviews and teaching demonstrations will be conducted via remote video conferencing software.
