The University Collegium shall select the chancellor for a fixed term of no more than five years. Pursuant to the Universities Act, the chancellor is in charge of promoting science and scholarship and the University’s community relations, as well as overseeing the University’s interests and activities. The chancellor has the right to be present and speak whenever the Government considers matters that have a bearing on the University.

According to the University Regulations, the chancellor grants the titles of professor and docent. The chancellor shall also be in charge of inquiries concerning alleged violations of good scientific practice. In addition, the chancellor shall grant permission for the arrangement of conferment ceremonies. As agreed regarding the division of labour with the University leadership, the chancellor shall manage the University’s fundraising efforts.

The chancellor must have a distinguished record in working to promote scholarship, the arts or the university system. The successful fulfilment of these duties requires that the appointee be familiar with the university sector. During the selection process, additional merit shall be accorded for insight into research or educational policy, active participation in the international academic community and for access to a wide social network. In addition to Finnish and Swedish language skills, the position requires, at minimum, good skills in the English language. The salary and other terms of the position shall be agreed upon separately.
