Three new projects in ABRU

New year, new research: three exciting new research projects have started in the Aquatic Biogeochemistry Research Unit (ABRU). The new projects focus on elemental (C, N, P) and pollutant (microplastic) cycling in both marine and limnic habitats and thereby add to the already wide variety of biogeochemical themes covered by the group.

Saija Saarni (PostDoc), Dana Hellemann (PostDoc) and Siqi Zhao (Phd student) are the new additions to ABRU. Saija was the first, joining the group already last September from University of Turku with her project `BaSeMent: Baltic Sea monitoring on microplastic sedimentation processes´ (2019-2022, Academy of Finland). After a short break succeeding her PhD graduation last summer, Dana rejoined the group in January with her new project `Elucidating seasonal substrate limitation of benthic nitrate reduction in the coastal Baltic Sea´ (2020-2021, Walter and Andrée de Nottbeck Foundation). At the same time, also Siqi from the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan, started her project ´Timescales of recovery from eutrophication in Finnish lakes` (2020-2023, China Scholarship Council). All three are looking forward to a busy field season in the Turku Archipelago, Hanko Archipelago and Lake Hiidenvesi in Southern Finland.

Welcome to the group!
