This was the last research cruise of the TOPICAL project to study changing oxygen conditions in fjord environments of the Swedish West Coast and their impact on sediment proxies. Among other activities, sediment cores were collected for resin-embedding and geochemical microanalysis. Sediment cores were stepwise sliced into 10 cm long miniature sub-cores (see picture, taken by Mareike Paul).
In general, resin-embedding is a method which allows both keeping the vertical structure of the sediment intact and minimalizing the dissolution of redox-sensitive trace metals for microanalysis. Previous studies have proven its applicability for different research purposes and study locations. The seasonal variability of the Swedish Fjord system and its unique environmental setting (high salinity with a wide range of bottom water oxygen concentrations) gives an excellent opportunity for further testing and adapting this method.
