Explore the university's gem, the renovated main building!

The Helsinki University Museum will host two guided tours of the university's historic main building on Friday, Nov 18, 2022 on the occasion of the European Academic Heritage Day.

On the tour, you will hear about specific architectural features of the old part of the main building designed by C. L. Engel, plaster sculptures based on ancient mythologies, the layers of history in the Great Hall, and the university's latest art acquisition. Why is there only a copy of Albert Edelfelt's painting in the Great Hall? Who were among the university's first female students?

The English-language tour starts at 3 p.m. We meet in the lobby, or vestibule of the Main Building (Unioninkatu 34, Helsinki). Free entrance.

This festive day has been celebrated in European universities since 2012. It has been established by UNIVERSEUM, a collaborative network of European university museums and collections. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of the academic cultural heritage and the importance of science.
