Descriptions of rituals speak of priestly fears

ANEE member, postdoctoral researcher Céline Debourse has written a monograph on the Late Babylonian ritual texts dealing with the New Year Festival.

Debourse studies the cuneiform texts in relation to other priestly texts of the Hellenistic period. She concludes that they should be considered expressions of the Babylonian priesthoods’ fears and aspirations more than actual rituals.

The book “Of Priests and Kings: The Babylonian New Year Festival in the Last Age of Cuneiform Culture” was published by Brill in February 2022. It is available on the publisher’s website.
