CfP: The "Great White North"?

The conference "Great White North"? - Critical Perspectives on Whiteness in the Nordics and its Neighbours is organized in Helsinki in August 2019. The call for papers is open, as well as a call for papers for the linked doctoral student workshop.

The conference and doctoral student workshop are a joint initiative of the Department of Cultures and Department of Languages at the University of Helsinki.

The multi-disciplinary conference seeks to examine post- and de-colonial perspectives of Whiteness that do not take ‘modern’ nations and regions as their departure, and can therefore accommodate different practices of migration, different understanding of indigeneity, and different Nordic ‘ethnicities’. The organisers aim to discuss questions of linguistic/cultural difference in the expression and representation of Whiteness in the Nordics and question how the notion of belonging has changed over time. The conference takes place on August 27–28th, 2019. Proposals for twenty-minute papers are accepted on the conference website until April 30th.

A doctoral workshop is organized on August 26th in connection with the conference. The workshop invites graduate students from different fields in humanities and social sciences working with issues of whiteness, race, post-colonialism and belonging to discuss their on-going research projects and comparatively approach issues of ‘whiteness’ in the context of the North. In order to apply, please see instructions here.
