University of Helsinki is the 56th best in the world

The University of Helsinki maintained its ranking from last year in the Shanghai ranking.

The University of Helsinki repeated its record ranking from last year, retaining its 56th position in the Academic Ranking of World Universities issued by ShanghaiRanking. The University maintains its goal to rank among the top 50 universities in the world.

Rector Jukka Kola believes the ranking is based on the University of Helsinki’s research which is of a high quality, broad in scope and has significant impact.

“Thanks for this success are due to the University’s motivated staff and its top researchers. Due to their work that the University has maintained its position despite intense competition,” says Kola.

The University of Helsinki is the only Finnish university to be ranked among the top one hundred. The next closest is the University of Eastern Finland, which ranked in the 301–400 range. Aalto University, the University of Oulu and the University of Turku ranked in the 401–500 range.

Among Nordic universities, the University of Helsinki ranked third, preceded only by the University of Copenhagen (30th) and the Karolinska Institutet (44th).

There are approximately 17,000 universities in the world. The top 800 of the Shanghai ranking featured 29 Nordic universities: 11 from Sweden, seven from Finland, six from Denmark, four from Norway and one university from Iceland.
The top-ranking university in the world is again Harvard University in the United States. Only four non-US universities ranked among the global top 20.
