The University of Helsinki has received €14 million from the Academy of Finland for the period 2018-2022 in funding intended to support the research profiles of universities. A total of €50 million were granted to 12 Finnish universities in the fourth PROFI funding round.
In total, the University of Helsinki has received €48,5 million in the four application rounds for profiling funding.
The latest €14 million is intended to fund 20 tenure track positions and complementary measures for the following research profiling areas:
- Matter and Materials (M+M)
- Inequality, Wellbeing and Security (INEQ)
- One Health and Welfare (1HEALTH)
“These profiling areas include existing high-quality areas and emerging areas with potential to reach the top level. The involved faculties have come up with excellent plans to develop these areas towards increased interdisciplinary research and impact”, explains Vice-Rector Jouko Väänänen, who led the application preparation.
Previous PROFI calls
In PROFI1 call, closed in January 2015, University of Helsinki received 9 million euros in three profiling areas: Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE), Physics and ICT, and Statistics.
In PROFI2 call, closed in November 2015, University of Helsinki received 10.5 million euros in five profiling areas: Helsinki Centre for Digital Humanities (HELDIG), Learning in the Digital World, Interdisciplinary Russian Studies, Behavioural Life Science and Global Law.
In PROFI3 call, closed in November 2016, University of Helsinki received 15 million euros in three profiling areas: Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR), Helsinki Centre for Data Science (HiDATA) and Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS).
