The University of Helsinki breaks into the top 100 in the Times Higher Education ranking

The University of Helsinki reached the 76th position in the recently published Times Higher Education World University Ranking. Last year, the University ranked 103rd, so this year’s result is an improvement of 27 positions.

The University improved its results in all five categories: teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industrial income. The ratio of publications to the number of academic staff has also developed favourably.

“This is a great result and accurately reflects the excellent work of our researchers and teachers. I am particularly delighted by the fact that our scores for both teaching- and research-related reputation metrics were higher than ever before,” states Rector Jukka Kola.

The 76th position is, by a clear margin, the University’s highest achievement in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking since its inception in 2010. While the methodology of the ranking remained unchanged, the source material for publications and citations is now the Elsevier Scopus database as opposed to the previously used Thomson Reuters Web of Science.

Well in the top 100

The overall rating of the University of Helsinki is evaluated according to different methods and criteria through comparisons with about 17,000 universities around the world. However, the University of Helsinki is fully established among the top 100 research universities in the world. In the Shanghai Ranking of World Universities, published in August 2015, the University placed 67th, six places above the previous year’s result.

The most commonly used university ranking lists are the Taiwan, Shanghai, QS and Times Higher Education rankings. The Taiwan and Shanghai rankings base their evaluation of universities on the bibliometric analysis of the scope and impact of the university’s research. The QS and Times rankings include reputation surveys conducted among researchers and experts to support publication analyses.
