Fifteen researchers of the University of Helsinki among the world’s most cited scholars in their respective fields

In the case of atmospheric sciences, the number of citations is particularly high: there are 10 researchers from the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) on the Highly Cited Researchers list.

Among the most cited scholars globally, 15 researchers working at the University of Helsinki rank in the top percentile. Eleven of them carry out research primarily at the University, while four have their primary affiliation elsewhere.

The Highly Cited Researchers list ranks scholars whose articles other scholars around the world have cited the most in 2008–2018.

A particularly strong field at the University of Helsinki was identified at the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR), 10 of whose researchers made the list. The Institute is headed by Academy Professor Markku Kulmala.

Kulmala considers the result significant, as researchers must publish highly-cited articles regularly to be placed on the list. According to Kulmala, strong representation on the list from the University of Helsinki's atmospheric sciences is the result of persevering work and renewal.

“In the 1990s, we began by carrying out research in basic physics and conducting diverse data collection. Over the years, we have introduced many new initiatives, among them the development of the SMEAR II station at Hyytiälä and the launch of air quality research in China.”

Kulmala believes that having 10 of the 153 geoscientists ranked on the list work in Finland is another important achievement.

The Highly Cited Researchers list is compiled from the Web of Science indexing and search service, which covers peer-reviewed published research articles especially in the natural sciences and medicine. Due to this emphasis, scholars of the humanities, among others, are not included on the list.

This year a total of 27 scholars working at a Finnish university, research institute or company involved in research made the Highly Cited Researchers list. Last year, 36 researchers from Finland made the ranking, 18 of them from The University of Helsinki.

Citations made by other scholars are one of the central methods of assessing scientific quality, in addition to which they are a key factor in international university rankings.
