The academic year will begin with a Welcome week and Orientation for the new USP students. Students will participate in the official orientation programme by their home university (University of Helsinki or Aalto University) as well as in joint activities by the Master’s Programme in Urban Studies and Planning. Also Mesta ry, the student association of USP, will have something fun in store for the new students. Admitted USP students should reserve the orientation weeks (29.8.-7.8.) in their calendars – it’s a not-to-be-missed opportunity to get to know your new university and study peers!

"It's a priviledge to study in USP"
To ensure the best possible quality in teaching for the next academic year, feedback from both teachers and students has been collected throughout the first USP year via e.g. online questionnaires, discussions and a bootcamp for teachers. Continuous development of teaching is essential in this new interdisciplinary and international study programme. We want to involve everyone in the USP community – professors, teachers, students and coordinators – in the process. “It’s important that teaching staff has been collecting students opinions”, was a comment by one USP student.
Autumn 2018 studies
The USP autumn semester is full of inspiring lectures and learning activities! First year students will begin to develop their core skills in the Research Methods (5cr) and Urban GIS & Visual Tools (5cr) courses. Every Monday students will immerse in the series of HOT TALKS as part of the USP Introduction course (10cr), given by the best experts in urban studies and planning. On Fridays, Urban Challenge Studio I will integrate these multiple expert areas to address contemporary urban phenomena from different perspectives. Studio I will begin with an excursion to the Helsinki Metropolitan Region (12th – 14th of September), where students will dive into the UCS theme “Transurbanism”.
The second year USP students will continue to develop their expertise through elective courses, exchange studies or internships. Elective studies are chosen according to the students agreed personal study plans and can include e.g. USP-401 European Metropolitan Cultures (5cr) or USP-408 (Urban Challenge Studio 3). Read more about the Studio 3 here!
Teaching of the Master’s Programme in Urban Studies & Planning will begin on the 10th of September. Most teaching will take place in Urbarium, Porthania (Yliopistonkatu 3), at the University of Helsinki. Studio work will take place in Otaniemi Campus, Aalto University. USP courses for 2018-2019 are now listed at WebOodi of the University of Helsinki.
