Engeström's keynote at the Dare to Learn Conference

Conference celebrating Finland 100 years, September 5, 2017

Title: "What we have learned and what me must learn as a nation"

Abstract: Learning happens at multiple levels, ranging from the individual to organizations and entire nations. At the societal level, learning may be understood as macro-cycles of qualitative change, powerfully conceptualized by Carlota Perez as techno-economic paradigm shifts. In the period following the second world war, three such cycles may be identified in Finland, the third one being only in its early beginning. I will analyze these three cycles in terms of their economic, technological and political-ideological learning accomplishments and challenges. I will also ask, who is the teacher and what is the dominant pedagogy, and what are the implications for individuals and organizations facing tomorrow.
