Linux was born at the University of Helsinki 30 years ago. We celebrated this with a public jubilee seminar on Friday 8 October 2021 at 15-17 in Exactum at Kumpula campus. The event was a hybrid event in Zoom.

Speakers
Sebastian von Alfthan is a development manager at CSC – IT Center for Science, where his team develops the compute environment of the Finnish supercomputers Puhti and Mahti. He also has extensive experience in writing software for supercomputers. He originally joined CSC in 2007 after receiving his PhD from the Helsinki University of Technology, where he did computational condensed matter physics using atomistic simulations. During 2011-2015 he worked at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, where he led the development of a new space plasma simulation code.
Kaarle Hämeri is Chancellor of the University of Helsinki since 2017 and Professor in Aerosol physics since 2003. He has published more than 130 peer reviewed international papers in leading journals of aerosol and atmospheric sciences. In addition, he is author of a high school physics book series. He has held many positions of trust in international and national scientific associations among which the president positions of the International and European Aerosol Assemblies and Union of the University Professors (Professoriliitto). Hämeri is recipient of the International Aerosol Fellow award 2016.
Todd Kjos is the technical lead for the Android Kernel at Google. He maintains Android Open Source Project (AOSP) Common Kernels and is a Linux maintainer for the binder driver. He also leads the development of Android kernel scheduling and DVFS. Previously he worked on x86 and Itanium server enablement and Itanium virtualization.
Hannu Leppinen is a Software Design Lead at Huld Oy, where he leads the development team for the spacecraft control software (SCSW) of the PLATO space telescope. At Huld since 2015, he has worked on developing flight software for several spacecraft, including PLATO, the ExoMars rover, and the MetOp-SG and MTG meteorological satellites. Before Huld, he worked at Aalto University in the Aalto-1 and ICEYE satellite projects as a part of his PhD thesis (2018) on small satellites.
René Moddejongen is responsible for the Microsoft Open Source Strategy within Microsoft Western Europe as part of the Azure Business Group. He is also the Azure Developer Community Lead for Microsoft Western Europe. He is responsible to ensure Open Source solutions are pushed through the local Microsoft country teams by providing Go To Market plans. This includes Open Source Migration Programs, Application Modernization and Innovation plays including Cloud Native plus Open Source Database Migration/ Utilization. Prior to working for Microsoft, he worked for open source companies like Docker (2 years) and Red Hat (6 years) where he held several positions. Moddejongen has a degree in Business Administration from the University of Groningen.
Laura Ruotsalainen is Associate Professor of Spatiotemporal Data Analysis for Sustainability Science at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Her group does research on machine learning methods using spatiotemporal data for the development of autonomous systems and sustainable smart cities. She is member of the Helsinki Centre for Data Science (HiDATA) and Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (Helsus). She received her master's degree from University of Helsinki in 2003 and doctoral degree in 2013 from Tampere University of Technology.
Sasu Tarkoma is Professor of Computer Science, Head of the Department of Computer Science at University of Helsinki and Director of the Helsinki Center for Data Science (HiDATA). He is Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board for Finnish Defence (MATINE). He has authored 4 textbooks and published over 240 scientific articles and 10 granted US Patents. He is Fellow of IET and EAI, and Senior Member of IEEE and ACM. His research interests are Internet technology, distributed systems, data analytics, and mobile and ubiquitous computing. Tarkoma is actively involved also in the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT), the Finnish Center for AI (FCAI), and the Allied ICT Finland network.
