1) New Progam Directors for the Datafication Research Initiative

The new Program Directors of the Datafication Research Initiative are Eetu Mäkelä, Emilia Palonen and Katja Valaskivi.

2) HSSH Catalyst Grant: Call for Applications DL 20.12.

The Catalyst Grant provides modest but strategical support to existing and emerging research groups. Groups can apply support for a variety of needs, ideas and cooperative initiatives. These may, for instance, include support for: 

We also encourage applicants to suggest ideas other than the ones sketched above.

All existing and emerging research groups working in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities at the City Centre Campus can apply for the support. The PI of the application must be affiliated to one of the partner units of HSSH.

3) New Research Culture: After Democracy: Imagining Our Political Future 30.11

Next New Research Culture keynote speaker is Zizi Papacharissi. She is professor of communication and political science, head of the communication department, and University of Illinois Scholar at the University of Illinois–Chicago. In her new book, After Democracy: Imagining Our Political Future, drawing on original interviews conducted with citizens of more than thirty countries, Zizi Papacharissi explores what democracy is, what it means to be a citizen, and what can be done to enhance governance.

After the keynote address, the discussion will continue with commentators, Georg Boldt and Emilia Palonen.

4) Brown Bag Lunch: Activism and Contestations over Climate Politics in Online Space 23.11.

Ted Hsuan Yun Chen is a Postdoctoral Researcher jointly appointed in the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki and the Department of Computer Science, Aalto University. His primary research agenda focuses on the social and political consequences of climate change, and efforts to stem these negative and often unequal outcomes.

5) Introducing the New Research Assistant Lauri

Salutations! I am Lauri, new Research Assistant here at HSSH Institute. During the coming months I will assist the Institute in the fields of communications and event organization. I am a soon-to-graduate master student of Political History at the University of Helsinki.

My academic interests lie in Russia and post-Soviet space. In my thesis, I study Russian history politics during the last 20 years, and more specifically, the role Russian Military-Historical Society plays in it.
