Ultramicrotomes

The ultramicrotomes are mainly used to prepare thin sections for imaging with TEM. Either glass or diamond knifes can be used to cut thin sections of specimens embedded in epoxy. The section thickness could be adjusted from 60 to 750 nanometers.

Trimming device

Leica EM Trim 2

(Leica Mikrosysteme GmbH, Austria)

Location: Room 1412

The Leica EM TRIM2 is a high speed milling system with integrated stereomicroscope and LED ring illuminator for trimming of biological and industrial samples prior to ultramicrotomy.

The Leica TRIM2 features a 1 µm feed control for the milling cutter, perpendicular viewing of the embedded sample to determine position for accurate milling.

Knifemaker

Leica EM KMR2 Knifemaker

(Leica Mikrosysteme GmbH, Austria)

Location: Room 1412

The Leica KMR2 Glass Knifemaker produces 45° glass knives from 6.4, 8, and 10 mm glass utilizing the balanced-break method.

Variable lengths of glass knife edge can be produced for all room temperature and cryo sectioning.
