Because of the coronavirus situation there will not be contact teaching at the Art Room for now but in spring 2021 Theme Nights in remote teaching will be organised.

The University of Helsinki Art Room's remote Theme Nights will shed light on various interesting subjects for drawing that are easily available in home environment. Drawing Master Vappu Rossi will be the teacher and many nights will also involve introductions by visiting experts.

Registration to all Theme Nights in March will start on Monday, 8 March at 10 a.m.

The price for one night is 8 € / 5 €. The reduced price is for students, pensioners, unemployed, persons doing their military or non-military service, and professional artists. The Theme Nights will be held in Finnish.

The Theme Night on Monday, 22 March is only for students and postgraduate students of the University of Helsinki, and it is free of charge.

Necessary equipment is mentioned in each Theme Night presentation below. The participants will acquire the necessary equipment themselves. You can also try different instruments and drawing materials.

Prior to the course, the participants will receive an email with instructions and the link to the Zoom meeting of the Theme Night. Please check that you fill in the correct email address when filling in the registration form!

If the Zoom environment is new to you, we recommend that you familiarize yourself with it before the course. The Art Room and the University of Helsinki are not responsible for possible technical problems of individual participants.

Tuesday, 16 March 2021 at 5 p.m.: The Anatomy of the Hand

We draw the hand! First, Faculty of Medicine's University Lecturer in anatomy Suvi Viranta-Kovanen will give us an introduction about the structure and functioning of the hand and then we will examine the subject with

Drawing Master Vappu Rossi by drawing either one’s own hand or the hand of a family member / friend.

Wednesday, 17 March 2021 at 4 p.m.: The Anatomy of Pets

We draw our own pet! Faculty of Veterinary Medicine's University Lecturer in Anatomy Juha Laakkonen will tell us about the anatomy of our animal friends. After the introduction we will draw animals, following the instructions of Vappu Rossi. The participants can wish beforehand which animal they would like to hear about; information and instructions for sending wishes will be emailed to the participants prior to the course.

The Portrait Theme Night is comprised of short tasks: we draw each other in the Zoom meeting, we go through different methods of drawing and try traditional, experimental and maybe even  humoristic approaches to drawing a face. This remote course suits for beginners and advanced drawers alike. Drawing Master Vappu Rossi will be the teacher.

Target group: only for students and postgraduate students of the University of Helsinki
