About the library

Helsinki University Library is the largest multidisciplinary research library in Finland, providing library and information services in all the fields of science at the University.

The library offers its services online and on all four campuses of the University.

Helsinki University Library provides information environment services of high international quality for the requirements of research, teaching and studying at the University. The library promotes the availability and dissemination of scientific knowledge in society, actively developing its field and cooperating on both the national and international levels.


Helsinki University Library is an independent institute of the University of Helsinki.

The operation of the library is managed by University Librarian Kimmo Tuominen, PhD, supported by the Board.

The Library's operations are steered by the strategic plan of the University of Helsinki and by the library’s target programme based on this plan. On the basis of the target programme, the library produces an annual action plan.

Director of Learning Services

The Library consists of three service units:

  • Learning Services supports teachers in their work and students in their studies. This unit provides the Library’s customer and guidance services (including guidance and training in information seeking), information management and learning environment services.
  • Access Services is responsible for the library's collections, acquisition and marketing of resources, creating metadata and the information systems which provide customers access to the various resources.
  • Research Services supports researchers at all stages of the research process, covering information and data management services, publication, assessment and visibility services as well as other specialist consultation services.

The Board of Helsinki University Library is appointed by the rector of the University of Helsinki. The task of the Board is, in cooperation with the University Librarian, to develop the library and information services of Helsinki University Library and the operation of the library as a whole according to the University's strategic plan and the target programme of the library.

The Board functions as an expert panel for the library and information field in the University of Helsinki.


The library has an advisory board on each campus, the members of which represent the staff and students of the faculties and independent institutes on each campus, the library's staff and the partners of the University.
