HELSUS Community Initiatives is another avenue for HELSUS members to seek funding for events in the field of sustainability science, held in either University of Helsinki's or Think Corner's (Tiedekulma) facilities.
The funding is targeted to HELSUS members who have no other funding available (e.g. allocated in project budget). The following criteria need to be fulfilled:
• Funding is for facility rent at the University of Helsinki or Think Corner (Tiedekulma)
• Responsible organiser is an approved HELSUS member when submitting the form
• A HELSUS member may receive the support no more than once per year
• The event topic is in the field of sustainability science
• Funding needs to be applied at least six weeks prior to the event

HELSUS Steering Group evaluates the applications using the evaluation criteria mentioned in the call text. The Academy of Finland regulations for disqualification of reviewers were followed and disqualified Steering Group members did not participate in the discussion or decision making.
The funding will be initiated in January 2024. Seed funding and Societal impact funding must be used during 2024. Researchers who have received funding must submit a report on the use of funding after the funding period.

The total available funding in the call 2023 was 620 000 € for two years. The funding was allocated to three funding instruments: Postdoctoral researcher funding (two years), Seed funding (one year) and Societal impact funding (one year). The HELSUS postdoctoral researcher funding was directed for HELSUS member’s personal postdoc funding or for recruiting a postdoctoral researcher. In total 43 applications were received.

Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science is a cross-faculty research unit in sustainability science within the University of Helsinki. The aim of the HELSUS funding is to enhance the development of sustainability science research in the University of Helsinki, to increase the amount of external research funding for sustainability research, and to promote international research collaboration.
According to HELSUS Steering Group decision (item 4, 26 March 2019) the call for applications for seed funding for research on the role of education in sustainability transformation was opened for HELSUS members in the Faculty of Educational Sciences on 1 April 2019. The deadline for the applications was 23 April 2019.
In total three applications were received. The applications were evaluated by a team appointed by HELSUS Steering Group using the evaluation criteria mentioned in the call text. The Academy of Finland regulations for disqualification of reviewers were followed, and disqualified persons did not participate in the evaluation, discussion or decision making.
