Call for Neuroscience Center Associate Member applications

Neuroscience Center (NC) of HiLIFE Helsinki Institute of Life Science focuses on translational research in molecular and cellular neuroscience, developmental neuroscience, cognitive and systems neuroscience related nervous system diseases. NC research groups operate mainly in the Meilahti medical campus with some activities also in Viikki. It hosts state-of-art for imaging facility including three multiphoton microscopes for fast scanning 3D brain imaging and optogenetic stimulation in experimental animal, as well as behavioral facilities for experimental animals and units for human induced pluripotent stem cell –derived brain cells and primary neuronal cell cultures. NC fosters collaboration locally with faculties and organizations with an interest in neuroscience at the University of Helsinki.

The NC Associate Member (NCA Member) program provides researchers at the University of Helsinki co-affiliation to NC with strategic competitive research support for collaboration between NC and other top-level neuroscience research carried out across the life science campuses. NCA members are granted with funding of 30 000 - 70 000 €/year and gain access to NC research infrastructures. Possible HiLIFE Fellow funding is taken into account in granting NCA Members. NCA members are expected to conduct collaborative projects with other NC PIs, or develop novel research platforms or technologies that promote research in NC focus areas, and indicate their NC affiliation in publications and website.

NC is now inviting applications for a three-year NCA Member program from the UH principal investigators of high international quality with proven recent scientific excellence. Up to six NCA members are selected.

Deadline for applications is October 15, 2018.

The NCA Member program is expected to initiate by January 2019.

Eligible applicants

  • are principal investigators employed by the University of Helsinki
  • have ongoing or granted external competitive funding with applicant as PI at a level of 50 000 € or more for 2018.
  • are not currently employed by NC

 

Application procedure and basis of assessment

The applicants are shortlisted by a Nomination Committee followed by evaluation by NC SAB. The evaluation is expected to be completed by the end of November 2018. Assessment is based particularly on recent scientific excellence, impact and ability/potential to promote research in NC focus areas. NCA Membership agreement will be negotiated with host units of NCA Member candidates.

In the online form the applicants are requested to provide

  • a short description of applicant’s plans for promoting research within NC focus areas in form of platforms, technologies or collaborative research project, and added value of NCA membership for the applicant’s research (max 300 words),
  • total amount of external competitive funding granted for 2018, and
  • five key publications since 2014 with the motivation for highlighting them (max 100 words), with average JIF percentile or Publication Forum Level for the qualifying publication.

Additionally, the following documents should be attached to the online form as a single combined pdf file:

  • list of not more than 20 selected publications, patents, invention disclosures, and/or other important research output since 2014,
  • Curriculum vitae describing qualifications, achievements and grant support (max 2 pages), and
  • Research plan including dissemination of results (max 3 pages).
