Particle physics and astrophysics

The research of the Division of Particle Physics and Astrophysics covers a wide range of some of the exciting and active fields in experimental and theoretical particle physics, theoretical and observational cosmology, astrophysics, Solar system physics, and space physics.

The experimental particle physics research groups use the facilities in large international particle physics research centres, playing important roles in experiments at CERN in Geneve. The research activity covers for example the electroweak symmetry breaking, heavy quark physics and forward physics.

The research in theoretical particle physics ranges across quantum field and string theories, targeting both the structure of fundamental theories and the phenomenology of particles.

The theoretical cosmologists investigate the properties of the Universe at very early times and at very large scales. Their research interests include the cosmic microwave background, inflation models, dark energy and string cosmology.

The observational cosmology group participates in the European Space Agency's (ESAPlanck Surveyor Mission and Euclid experiments.

The research areas in astronomy and astrophysics range from planetary system research, star formation and star activity, to the formation and evolution of galaxies. Space physics research specialises in space plasmas and space weather phenomena.

There is a very strong overlap with the theoretical programmes and the particle physics programmes of the Helsinki Institute of Physics (HIP). An important national collaborator is the Finnish Centre for Astronomy with ESO (FINCA).

International collaborations
