Below are the introductions of the research groups that operate partly or wholly at the Faculty of Pharmacy (in alphabetical order).
Please note that many Principal Investigators and their research groups are part of the Drug Research Program units.
Group leader: Päivi Tammela
We are experts in antimicrobial drug discovery, exploring new ways to confront the global challenge of emerging drug resistance amongst bacteria.
Chemical Microsystems Lab
Group leader: Tiina Sikanen
Pharmaceutical chemistry, Drug metabolism, microfluidics, polymer microfabrication, analytical Chemistry, mass spectrometry.
Group leader: Marja Airaksinen
Medication safety, optimizing pharmacotherapy and promoting health.
Computational Drug Discovery
Group leader: Henri Xhaard
We conduct problem-oriented computational research, i.e. we select the most suitable methods to solve scientific questions. We also develop our own computational tools. Recurrent scientific questions are related to ligand binding and ligand design, and to protein sequence-structure-function relationships and molecular evolution.
Group leader: Arto Urtti
Optimal delivery of drugs to their target sites is essential for drug efficacy and safety. Drug delivery unit explores the key pharmacokinetic factors in drug delivery as well as new technologies for delivering drugs, especially to the eyes.
Group leader: Adyary Fallarero and Leena Hanski
Research group studying bacterial biofilms and the intracellular pathogen Chlamydia pneumoniae. Our work focuses on identifying strategies to fight persistent infections caused by them.
Group leader: Pia Siljander
The Extracellular Vesicles group studies submicron membrane vesicles released by most cells, and present in all body fluids, but also e.g., in oceans.
Group leader: Vincenzo Cerullo
Development of novel platforms for cancer immunotherapy.
Laboratory of Neurotherapeutics
Group leader: Tomi Rantamäki
Creating next generation products and solutions that will change lives.
Nanomedicines and Biomedical Engineering
Group leader: Hélder A. Santos
Nanomedicine, Biomedical Engineering and Controlled Drug Delivery.
Group leaders: Alex Bunker and Tapani Viitala
Combining experimental and computational methodologies to generate mechanistic insight into drug action and drug delivery systems.
Group leader: Timo Laaksonen
We work on controlled drug release and delivery using modern methods and materials.
Pharmacoeconomics is a sub-discipline of health economics, studying the cost-effectiveness of pharmaceutical therapies.
PREP in Neurodegenerative Disorders
Group leader: Timo Myöhänen
Our goal is to find a way to stop neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease by targeting on PREP enzyme.
Group leader: Virpi Talman
Talman Lab aims at discovering new ways to treat heart diseases by investigating the molecular mechanisms of cardiac regeneration to identify new drug targets.
