Greetings from the programme

Congratulations on being accepted to the Master’s Programme in Genetics and Molecular biosciences a.k.a GMB!

We are looking forward to welcoming an outstanding, diverse group of incoming students next autumn.

Our educational programme is supported by dedicated staff, high-class research and excellent infrastructure. All students start their studies by taking an introductory course (Principles of Genetics and Molecular Biosciences), which, among other coursework, provides information to help the students in selecting their study track and in designing a smooth and productive study plan. The course includes lots of group work and familiarizes the students with each other, the staff, and the wide-range of top class research done in the groups associated with program.

Welcome to GMB,

Kari Keinänen, professor
programme director

Studying in the programme

You can orientate to your studies and courses before the orientation studies in August and find the preliminary teaching programme of the GMB programme on the page Instructions for students:

Studies begin in September with the course GMB-001 Principles of Genetics and molecular Biosciences, 14 cr.

During that course, you will get to know the GMB programme, the teachers and other students in the programme and plan and schedule your own study plan together with your personal supervisor.

You can plan your studies at the Studies service, including information about the structure and scope of your degree, course selections and other information related to studies.

Ask our students

Do you wonder what it is like to study at the University of Helsinki or our programme? How is student life or housing in the City of Helsinki?

You can chat directly with our student Joana, Jone or other University of Helsinki students on our chat platform. The student blog on the chat platform is also a great way to get an overview of student life in Helsinki. However, note that for questions related to admissions you should contact the Admission Services.

Get to know also Biosfääri ry, the student organisation of the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences.

Orientation and tutoring

The teaching officially starts on 2 September 2024, but you should participate in the orientation activities for the new students already before classes begin (Orientation week 26 August – 1 September). You will be assigned to a tutor group led by a senior student, or student tutor. You will learn more about studying in our programme and get support with administrative matters. This will make it easier for you to start your studies and life in Helsinki.

The detailed information concerning the orientation and student tutors will be published in the Instructions for students. Remember to select your programme in the dropdown menu to access the information relevant to your degree programme.
