Mark Hughes, Professor, Aalto University
Wood and the circular economy: challenges to the recirculation of wood
Professor Mark Hughes has previously undertaken extensive research in wood technology, biocomposites and wood modification but is now also working on improving the sustainability of wood construction. He leads the Wood Material Technology Group at Aalto University where they are researching the resource efficient use of wood in buildings, applying circular economy principles, such as cascading, to maximize the climate change mitigation potential of wood in construction.
Pekka Heikkinen, Professor, Aalto University
What I would like wood to be
Pekka Heikkinen is an award-winning professor in Wood Architecture at Aalto University. His research interests focus on sustainable and energy efficient building. He has worked on tens of design and development projects with wood, written numerous articles in architecture magazines, and led several research and development projects. He has received number of international and national awards for his research, teaching and architectural design in the field of wood construction including Schweighofer Innovation Prize (At), World Architecture News Award (UK), Rose of Construction and Wood Awards (Fin). Pekka Heikkinen was the 12th curator and the chair of International Alvar Aalto Symposium 2012 “Crafted”. In 2017 he was awarded as Knight, First Class, of the Order of the Lion of Finland, by the President of the Republic of Finland proposed by the Association of Finnish Architects SAFA
