Documentary film: Natura Urbana - the Brachen of Berlin

Tuesday, May 18th 2021 at 17.00-19.30, online screening

Sustainability Science Days 2021 offers its participants the online screening of Professor Matthew Gandy's documentary film Natura Urbana.

After the screening, we will join for a discussion with Prof. Gandy, who will first briefly introduce the research project behind Natura Urbana. This will be followed by a Q&A session.

The session is chaired by Research Fellow Sanna Lehtinen (Aalto University), and includes the following experts:

  • Senior researcher Kati Vierikko, Finnish Environment Institute
  • Adjunct professor Eeva Berglund, Aalto University

The Brachen of Berlin are unique. Emerging from war-time destruction, economic malaise, and geo-political division, these ostensibly empty sites evolved into laboratories for botanists, artists, and ordinary people seeking respite from the city. Today, however, these unusual spaces are fast disappearing. Natura Urbana explores the spontaneous diversity of plants in these spaces to illuminate the city’s complex history through the post-war period until the contemporary era.
