It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 18th International Saga Conference. The main theme of the conference will be Sagas and the Circum-Baltic Arena – Developing Dialogues between Sagas, Archaeology, Language and Folklore. In the spirit of the lively activity and interactions with diverse cultures around the Baltic Sea, the event will be held in two countries, in the cities of Helsinki and Tallinn, on 8–14 August 2022. Under the theme are the four strands:
- Sagas and Archaeology
- Sagas and Language
- Sagas and Folklore
- Sagas and Cultural Geography
Plenary speakers at the conference are:
- Haraldur Bernharðsson
- Tatjana Jackson
- Steven Mitchell
- Neil Price
Sessions are based on the following formats:
- Paper sessions (3–4 speakers)
- Poster sessions
- Round table discussion sessions (6–8 participants).
Papers and posters may be given in: Icelandic, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, English, German and French; all round table discussions should be in English. The title and abstract should be in the language of the presentation.
To submit a proposal please send an abstract of up to 350 words, clearly outlining the proposed presentation. Please include your name, status, affiliation, A/V needs, preferred strand and session format. Proposals should be submitted online before 31 July 2021 through our online form: https://www.lyyti.fi/reg/PPS_18_ISC_3018
Papers should be planned for 20 minutes of presentation followed by 10 minutes of discussion.
Poster sessions will be organized in two groups, one in Helsinki and one in Tallinn. In each city, posters will be up for the two days. During the specific session for posters, poster presenters must be available for questions and discussions. This session will include a poster slam, during which presenters will briefly state their name, affiliation, title and location of their poster in the session.
Round table discussions are led by a session chair who should coordinate the exchange of ideas and material in advance to foster engaged dialogue during the session itself. Participants are expected to summarize their material and theoretical contribution in 5-minute opening statements, followed by a general discussion.
Due to the limited number of places available, we have a limit of a 1+1 rule: each person may present in a maximum of one session of each type and a maximum of two types of sessions. Kindly specify the session format for which you are applying with your proposal and we will do our best to accommodate all wishes.
Please note that incomplete or over-length abstracts will not be considered. The program committee expects to notify presenters by mid-October 2021.
With this conference, we are also resuming the Saga Conference’s tradition of a pre-print publication that includes full papers of limited length. Contribution of a full paper to the pre-print is optional and participants can instead include the abstract from their paper proposal or a longer summary.

We look forward to seeing you in Helsinki and Tallinn in 2021!
