After graduation, students of the programme find employment in a wide variety of positions in which special knowledge of language is required.
One path prepares you for a research career; many graduates work as researchers in Finland and abroad. You can also work in the political, diplomatic, and educational sectors, as well as research administration. You might find other potential employers in publishing, the media and journalism, public relations, business communications, and public administration, as well as NGOs.
If you choose a technological orientation, you can find work in language technology firms or more generally in the IT sector. Graduates of USchool have good job prospects in User Experience. Multinational companies are in constant need of experts in speech and language technology, linguistics, cognitive science and digital humanities, and people who can work in multidisciplinary teams. Additionally, there is a vibrant field of Finnish companies in this area, some established and many promising start-ups. Some students have founded their own companies and become entrepreneurs.

The Master of Arts degree provides general eligibility for postgraduate studies and a solid foundation for doctoral studies.
At the University of Helsinki, doctoral education is carried out in four doctoral schools. For those working on language(s), the relevant programme is the Doctoral Programme in Language studies. Students graduating from Cognitive Science and Digital Humanities may choose other programmes from the Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences.
