Speaker: Jukka K. Nurminen Title: Quantum software engineering Abstract: As quantum hardware is progressing, the software side of quantum computing becomes increasingly important. How do we support the software developers in the creation of software for quantum computers? How do we manage the different lifecycle activities, like testing and debugging, of quantum software? How do we deal with the added complexity of quantum computing, which, at least for a beginner, feels much more complicated than the familiar world of bits? What kind of skills are needed to convert a real-life problem into a suitable form for quantum computing – and when is it worth the effort to do so? I will discuss some of our ongoing work on this area at the University of Helsinki. In particular, automatic detection of code suitable for quantum computing, benchmarking of quantum algorithms, and teaching quantum programming for computer scientists. At the moment there are more questions than answers. Interactive and interdisciplinary discussion of the needs for quantum software research would be welcome.
